Today was bittersweet my team did such an amazing job that we secured two termination of parental rights (TPR) and moved children closer to permanency which is always our goal in family foster care.
The lights, action and fanfare that goes into being a expert witness, the lawyers have brought their A game, the judge robe is perfectly starched and the parents are there looking for an opportunity to dispute any part of the testimony they can. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the judge final words and the bang of the gavel. The air is tense and everyone is hoping for positive outcomes.
Then we all hear the outcome and in a blink of an eye there’s another family that has been dismantled and everyone retreats to the their corner. Everyone patted each other back job well done.
The truth is everyone gets to go to their respective places except the social worker. The truth is that the erasure of the mother rights is major and that social worker while in favor of the termination feels compel to show compassion to this mother.
The social worker is left with the mother to help her to comes to losing her rights. The level of compassion that social workers have for families and clients are immeasurable.
I’m reminded that social workers are essential to so many families and even when other professionals get to high five and say job well done our work continues. This story serves as a reminder that social workers actually live the social work core values of compassion, empathy and geninuesness on a daily basis.
